Recently I hosted a 3-day Women’s event, The BELIEVE Event, for those who are ready to take a stand and make a change in their lives. I was both inspired and honored by their choice to make 2018 their best year ever.

Health Benefits of Kale


Kale has quickly risen to fame in the last few years and for good reason. This now famous green vegetable, also known as “leaf cabbage”, is full of vitamins that boost your immunity and cleanse your body of toxins.

Besides these, kale boasts of a number of other healing benefits as well. Here are a few of kale’s positive effects – and why you should be including it in your diet (and your green juice) right now.

Kale has anti-inflammatory properties

One notable, yet not usually discussed, benefit of kale is its anti-inflammatory properties. In particular, kale is balanced in terms of the omega-3:omega-6 ratio, making it a kind of “perfect food” in terms of inflammation.

Omega-3 fatty acids are essential to your health as they regulate and normalize cholesterol levels. On the other hand, processed foods are normally rich in pro-inflammatory omega-6. As so, it can causes chronic inflammation, which is linked to diseases such as cancer, arthritis, and Crohn’s disease.

Kale provides a balanced ratio of 1:1, with slightly more omega-3s. It thus promotes anti-inflammatory omega-3 while helping reduce the negative effects of omega-6 rich food.

Kale is a natural antioxidant

Besides its anti-inflammatory properties, kale is also a natural antioxidant. Notably, kale is rich in vitamin C and beta-carotene (the precursor to vitamin A), which counteract the effects of free radicals.

We are exposed to harmful free radicals every day, from air pollution, toxin-rich processed food, and harmful chemicals in the water. A combination of these factors lead to “oxidative stress”, which causes cell damage, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and other illnesses. Antioxidants like kale are thus necessary to our system, as they rid the body of these harmful effects.

Kale is good for detox

Kale’s claim to fame is in its cleansing effects. It is a natural detoxifier that contains a component called isothiocyanates (ITCs), which are made from glucosinolates. These ITCs work at a cellular level, which means that they provide a very deep cleanse to the body.

As so, kale helps destroy the toxins and free radicals from the inside, then helps to remove them totally from your system. It is thus a great all-in natural detoxifier.

Kale is good for your heart

Experts have noted that kale’s “very deep color” shows off its wide range of vitamins and minerals. However, kale’s vibrant color does not just mean that it is full of much-needed nutrients, but also that it promotes your heart’s health.

Besides its anti-inflammatory effects and antioxidants, kale also has a good dose of vitamin K and vitamin E, both of which can lower bad cholesterol levels while increasing good cholesterol in your body. Moreover, it has also been found to lower the instance of heart disease.

Kale promotes healthy vision

Another untalked about benefit of kale is how it also aids in vision improvement.

Kale has lutein and zeaxanthin, nutrients which actually give kale its dark green color. These two nutrients help improve your eyesight and even prevent cataracts and macular degeneration. Moreover, lutein and zeaxanthin also act as antioxidants in the eyes and filter harmful light wavelengths.

Kale has cancer-preventing properties

While there are a number of vitamin-rich food that are known to fight cancer, kale has been found to prevent and even stop cancer in its tracks.

As previously mentioned, kale has glucosinolates, a group of chemical compounds that contain sulfur. The digestion process turns glucosinolates into compounds that biologically prevent cancer cell growth. They do this by inactivating carcinogens, protecting cells from DNA damage, inhibiting tumor blood vessel formation, among others.

The healing benefits of kale

The popularity of kale may be thought of as a trend, but, in truth, it is a superfood with many amazing benefits. It is a great addition to your everyday diet, especially since it is available in many forms, from fresh greens to kale chips.

While it is true that it has an acquired flavor, there are so many ways to prepare and enjoy it. (If you have yet to try it, it is highly recommended to start with baby kale, which is more tender and easier to work with.
