Recently I hosted a 3-day Women’s event, The BELIEVE Event, for those who are ready to take a stand and make a change in their lives. I was both inspired and honored by their choice to make 2018 their best year ever.

4 Benefits of a Good Night’s Sleep

Sleep is vital to our well being, in both physical and mental aspects. Adults need a good 6 to 8 hours of sleep each night, though needs vary from person to person.

The quality of our sleep is just as important as the number of hours we spend sleeping. Quality sleep, per the National Sleep Foundation, has 4 key determinants:

* Sleeping more time while in bed (at least 85 percent of the total time)

* Falling asleep in 30 minutes or less

* Waking up no more than once per night; and

* Being awake for 20 minutes or less after initially falling asleep.

However, getting good quality sleep is not just about resting because you are tired or so that you could wake up refreshed. Here are 4 more benefits of a good night’s sleep.

A Good Night’s Sleep is Good for Your Physical Health

Sleep plays a big role in the body’s growth and development, especially as we age. Notably, sleep plays a particular role in healing and repairing our heart and blood vessels. It also helps regulate a number of hormones, which include those that help us balance between feeling hungry (ghrelin) and feeling full (leptin), as well as the hormone insulin, which helps the body control blood sugar levels.

In addition, increased risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes may result from continuous lack of sleep. A good night’s sleep is just what your body needs to rest and repair itself while keeping your heart healthy and happy.

A Good Night’s Sleep Helps With Memory Formation

While our tissues and organs are repairing themselves as we sleep, our brain strengthens and renews its connections to the body. This helps us consolidate the memories and learning we acquire within the day.

Being refreshed through sleep enables us to function better the following day. Aside from being able to recall the things that we’ve learned and memories we’ve gained, we can also focus more, make better decisions, and expand on our creativity.

A Good Night’s Sleep is a Great Stress Reliever

While some of us turn to hobbies, sports, or other recreational activities to divert our attention from stress, sleep is nature’s way of relieving us from the physical and mental strain of stress. The hormones released when we are stressed are cleared out while we snooze.

However, it is important to note that oversleeping and not facing the root cause of our problems would only make stress pile up while creating more strain on ourselves. So, when we’re stressed out, we need to sleep – then get back to tackling our daily problems.

A Good Night’s Sleep Helps with Your Emotional Well Being

Sleep generally affects our mood. Getting enough quality sleep makes us feel lighter inside and consequently improves our interactions with the people around us.

In addition, lack of sleep contributes to depression and anxiety. So, to keep our emotional stability and create a happier environment for us and the people around us, we need our regular good night’s sleep.

Getting a good night’s sleep is not just about getting enough rest. It is also about the healing benefits it has to our body, from our physical to emotional to mental well being.

Self-Care is NOT Selfish

As a holistic health coach, I enjoy helping my clients achieve their goals. However, I also know that while I love serving people, I have to give myself time for self-care, too.

Because yes, self-care is NOT selfish.

It is a very noble thing to put others’ needs before our own. However, just as you cannot pour more water into a glass that is already full, you cannot fully take care of the people around you without taking care of your own needs first.

As a matter of fact, when you are full of stress, frustrations, and negativity, you can only show up to your relationships half way. You may even spread that negative energy to the people you love.

Know that it is all right to take a step back and take care of yourself, too.

By fulfilling your own personal needs, you can come from a more balanced, more peaceful, more grounded space – a wonderful mindset to have when you slip back into your role of parent, sibling, teacher, friend.

By indulging in self-care, you are allowing yourself to be more present, more loving, and more focused on your day-to-day activities and relationships.

This is the power of love, and it is not selfish. You are worthy of love and care, and so do all the people around you.

It may be difficult to get into the habit of practicing self-care, but there are simple things you can do to embrace this action of self-love. Here are a few:

Take 5 minutes of quiet self-reflection at the beginning and at the end of day.

Spend 30 minutes on a walk by yourself outside.

Eat more fruits and vegetables. They boost your mood and give your body love through with their power-packed nutrients.

Visit farmers’ markets to take in new sights and get fresh produce for your home.

Laugh more.

Get enough sleep.

Take breaks from your computer, your phone, and social media.

Join a yoga class or practice them at home through online videos.

These are just a few of the things you can do to practice self-care. The important thing is to pick one action item right now and put it into practice today. Then, make it a habit to allow yourself self-love every day.

Love is not selfish, nor is self-care. Caring for yourself is a great way to recharge your energy and keep yourself motivated to do what needs to be done.

The Importance of A Gratitude Mindset

Our world is becoming more and more complicated. It can be difficult to shift our thinking to a more positive one when we ourselves are getting bogged down by stress, cares, and worries.

This is why I was so grateful when I discovered so many years ago the importance of a gratitude mindset to our everyday life.

This is among the many lessons I learned when I went on a journey to India and talked to Amma, a woman who has dedicated herself to a life of service and contribution. Her teachings have affected me in many ways and really changed my perspective when it comes to life.

She taught me that while it can indeed be challenging to bring ourselves to a more energizing and loving place, it is important to remind ourselves of our purpose and contributions to the world.

I needed to look at what I was doing and really consider the ways I can serve my clients and every person I would meet. I realized that if I put something good into the world, it could have a positive and powerful impact that could influence other people.

So where did I start? Where did I begin to grow this kind of thinking?

It’s simple. I started with gratitude.

When your heart is full of gratefulness for the people around you, you will focus on their beauty and how their presence makes a difference in your life. Instead of being bogged down by their imperfections, you only see their warmth and their contributions to the path your walk.

When you come from this wonderful place of sharing gratitude and positivity, everything else just happens naturally. Everything else will follow. If your thoughts are of purity, integrity, and authenticity and you make decisions from that place of love, you will get clarity. You will realize opportunities. You will become more balanced and in tune with yourself. Then, that will naturally manifest in your life.

In this moment, remember the people in your life who have made a big difference to you. Thank them. Acknowledge them. Don’t assume that they know. Let them know how grateful you are for them. You will soon realize that you have actually received so much more than you have ever imagined.
