The Health Benefits of Turmeric

Are you familiar with turmeric? Turmeric is best known for being an important ingredient of curry dishes. It can be distinguished by its yellow color, and it gives curry its characteristic spicy taste.

Turmeric belongs to the ginger family and contains a substance called “curcumin,” which is known to have healing compounds. This herb has also been used for medicinal purposes, especially in Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine. It is believed to prevent and treat all kinds of diseases, from depression to digestive problems to even cancer. Here are a few health benefits of turmeric, the “cure-for-all” herb.

Turmeric controls inflammation

One of the best assets of turmeric is its ability to control inflammation. One study has shown that the curcumin fights chronic inflammation. Chronic inflammation is dangerous to our body because it can hugely contribute to increasing the risks of heart disease and/or degenerative conditions. By taking turmeric, your body is able to fight diseases and repair damage better.

In another study, it has been shown that curcumin not only controls bodily inflammation but also has antiarthritic properties. It was observed that the curcumin in turmeric contains elements that reduce tenderness and swelling in the joints. It has also been proven to be more effective than other anti-inflammatory drugs in the market, making it a good natural alternative.   

Turmeric improves brain function

A study was made that looked into the capability of turmeric to manage stress and depression-related disorders. It was observed that turmeric affected the brain-derived neurotrophic factor, which are peptides or proteins needed to support the growth and survival of nerve cells. This means that turmeric can help in delaying or reversing brain disorders like Alzheimer’s disease.

Aside from dealing with age-related brain disorders, turmeric can also affect hormones in our body that can help fight off depression. It has been shown that turmeric extract decreases the level of hormones which induce depression or stress. Its extract, which can be made into a supplement, also has the potential to be an antidepressant.

Turmeric lessens the risk of heart disease

Among the various health benefits of turmeric is its ability to lessen the risk of heart disease. Curcumin has the ability to dilate the arteries and improve blood flow to the heart. It has also been noted that the use of curcumin has a better effect on our body than using drugs used to treat thinning or clogged arteries.

In addition, curcumin has also been shown to lower LDL cholesterol, or bad cholesterol, in the body. This is partly thanks to its inflammatory effect, as mentioned previously. As so, it reduces the risk of developing serious heart problems such as stroke and heart disease.

Turmeric is a good source of antioxidants

Free radicals in the environment are known to give the body oxidative stress, which is believed to be the cause of many diseases. Antioxidants, such as those in turmeric, are helpful in protecting the body from free radicals found in the air you breathe, the food you eat, and the water you drink.

Notably, the curcumin in turmeric is a powerful antioxidant that can neutralize these free radicals. It can also boost the bodily antioxidant enzymes. As so, turmeric stimulates the body’s antioxidant mechanisms while blocking free radicals directly.

Turmeric helps treat and prevent cancer

As previously mentioned, turmeric contains a substance called curcumin. Curcumin has been clinically proven to hinder the progress of some types of cancer and improve the detoxification in the body. It is more commonly observed to have positive results on breast cancer, stomach cancer, and skin cancer.

Turmeric has also been shown to stop precancerous changes from developing into cancer. The most common cancer that have been tested with turmeric are cancers of the breast, digestive system, and liver.

Green juice is now among the go-to beverages of most health-conscious people, and for good reason.
